CMPC details its sustainable performance in regional forums

2 set 2022

On Wednesday 21st July 21, CMPC’s General Manager, Francisco Ruiz-Tagle, presented the company’s Integrated Report for 2021, detailing the main environmental and social initiatives and achievements of the company. He was joined by the former Vice President of the Central Bank, Joaquín Vial, who spoke about the value of biodiversity.

In his opening address, CMPC’s President, Luis Felipe Gazitúa, said: "CMPC believes in and is committed to giving environmental, social and governance issues the same or greater priority than financial performance". In addition, he added, "the government must play a leading role in incentivizing and taking advantage of the benefits that forests represent for carbon sequestration in the face of the climate emergency."
The regional governor of Biobío, Rodrigo Díaz, also present, highlighted the importance of the forest industry for the region and affirmed that " forestry activity is to the economy and life of the Biobío region what saltpeter was in the north of Chile and copper is today."
Ruiz-Tagle pointed out that "the company has made a fundamental effort across different areas to achieve an integrated performance with a focus on sustainable environmental social and business development. We have a series of initiatives with local communities, development, work within the forest industry itself, and we promote the development of local suppliers. This connection of shared value is something we seek as a priority in the company."

He went on to explain that CMPC’s goals include increasing the number of professional women at different levels of the organization, as well as those with a disability, and added: "We are very focused on cultural diversity, we care about these issues and recognize that a large organization such as ours must be diverse."
Finally, on innovation, Ruiz-Tagle explained: "Our most recent initiative involves cooperating with a Finnish university to develop natural, cellulose-based textile fibers: Pulp can be used for a range of applications, not just paper."

The meeting was also attended by numerous regional Mayors: Collipulli, Manuel Macaya; Birth, Carlos Toloza; Loncoche, Alexis Pineda; Cañete, Jorge Radonich; Yerbas Buenas, Luis Cadegan; Toltén, Guillermo Martínez; Laja, Roberto Quintana; and Empedrado (s), Daniel Morales. In addition, the regional government authority from the Science Ministry Sofía Valenzuela, the Rector of the University of Concepción, Carlos Saavedra and customers from the south of Chile participated.
