For the third consecutive year, in the Pulp & Paper category: CMPC recognized as one of the most sustainable companies in the world

19 Jan 2023

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) has ranked CMPC as the second most sustainable company in the world in the Pulp & Paper category. CMPC's sustainability approach is part of its corporate strategy and is based on global standards and commitments around the protection of human rights, labour relations, environment, education and work.

For the third consecutive year, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index recognized CMPC as one of the most sustainable companies in the world. Specifically, the company ranked second in the Pulp & Paper category. In addition, it was included in the industry indicators 'DJSI Chile', 'MILA Pacific Alliance' and 'Emerging Markets', which evaluate companies from more than 27 countries.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) is an international index that evaluates different indicators on the sustainable performance of listed companies. In this way, it provides a panoramic view of different industries of the world economy in environmental, social and economic terms, distinguishing the most outstanding companies in these areas.

Commenting on CMPC’s performance, the CEO of the company, Francisco Ruiz-Tagle, said that "it is very gratifying for all of us who are part of Empresas CMPC that the DJSI has once again considered us among the most sustainable companies in the world. And, above all, it is a new ratification that the environmental goals we have set, the way we relate to communities, in short, how we work, are going in the right direction."

The company has successfully led many initiatives to ensure its path to growth is more sustainable. For example, in environmental matters, the company has signed commitments that are now part of its corporate strategy.

Specifically, the company has set itself four targets from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. First, it will seek to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 2018. Second, it will aim to reduce industrial water use per ton of product by 25% by 2025.

Third, CMPC will seek to be a zero-waste company by end 2025, by reducing the generation of waste, valorizing by-products and strengthening circular models. Finally, the company set the goal of adding 100,000 hectares of land for conservation, restoration and / or protection by 2030.

CMPC's vision goes beyond its own work, understanding that its partners, suppliers and customers must also align themselves under the same sustainable principles. That is also why, in 2021, the company joined the Business Ambition for 1.5 °C campaign, which was launched in 2019 via the Science Based Targets Initiative, and which aims to commit companies to reducing their impact on the environment in their production chain and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions with a view to limiting the increase in global temperature to no more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Local development

Socially, CMPC wants to help the development of its local communities. Through a close link with communities, CMPC aims to generate opportunities for social and economic development at local level, implementing multiple programs that seek to bring out the best in people and communities.

One of CMPC’s biggest initiatives is within education and the founding of the CMPC-Duoc UC Birth Campus, the first centre of higher education studies in the commune located in the Biobío region, which will host seven training courses. The campus will cover more than 3,500 square meters and will have first-class rooms, libraries, auditorium, laboratories and large common spaces, among others.

Among the dozens of initiatives are Fibra Local and Primeros Pueblos, places where entrepreneurs from rural communities in the south of the country can promote their products; Water Challenge for Chile, which implements water solutions for human and/or agricultural consumption in different areas that are difficult to access; and the Challenge Comuna Sin Basura, which educates and is part of the community in waste reuse. Among its many achievements is the reuse of more than 64 tons of materials since its launch at the end of 2019.
